The academic and administration divisions of the University of Eldoret jointly conducted an induction training of deans, directors and heads of academic departments in a two-day event that was held at the University’s Town Campus on the 10th and 11th January 2019. The training was centered on the theme ‘Public University Leadership, Mentorship and Teamwork’ with the main goal of equipping the participants with relevant knowledge/information that would enable them to effectively execute their individual roles and positively contribute to the overall function(ing) of the university.
The event was formally opened by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Teresa A. O. Akenga, who also enlightened the team on the changes taking place in university education in Kenya. Prof Raphael M. Munavu (University of Nairobi) delivered a motivating keynote speech that addressed key elements of (good) governance and responsible leadership, which are crucial for continued delivery on the institutional mandate. The participants had a lot to learn from his insights and lived experiences in university management. Prof Peter Barasa (Alupe University College) also shared leadership tips, challenges and lessons learned during his journey up the academic leadership ranks. Other facilitators drawn from different administrative units of the university gave talks highlighting the procedures, rules/regulations and policies that guide operations within the university and in line with the national regulatory framework.
As a university we aim to offer quality service to our clients. This training was a valuable contribution to better performance as an institution as it has strengthened the capacity of the participants.
