Biography >>

The School of Environmental Studies at University of Eldoret is part of a national policy focus on the management of natural resources and the environment for sustainable development in Kenya. The School is thus fully motivated in its quest to be a Centre of Excellence in Environmental Studies.

The School produces a pool of skilled professionals who are well grounded in theory and practice, in Environmental Biology, Environmental Health, Environmental Hydrology and Water Resource Management, Environmental Geology and Geoscience, Environmental Planning and Management and Community development. The experts churned out of these programmes are responsible for delivering Global and local government policies and Strategies including: Sustainable Development goals (SDG), Vision 2030 and the National Government Big 4 agenda that are aimed to achieve; Affordable housing, Food security, Manufacturing and Universal Health care.

The School is involved in building regional and international linkages and collaboration with potential institutions in the quest to broaden partnership in the field of environmental sciences. Planetary Health alliance has been identified as a potential institution of collaboration in understanding both regional and global environmental challenges of the current and their projected lasting solutions. Through this collaboration, impactful activities have resulted both to students, staffs and the community at large resulting in recognition both regionally and globally in the field of Planetary Health.

The School of Environmental Studies has been mounting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Audit (EA) for the last three decades and has trained participants from various Universities, Counties and Institutions; both national and international. This fosters the culture of Environmental Conservation and protection among communities and organizations.

To achieve our vision of providing high quality training and outreach programs in Fisheries and Aquatic Science technologies for increased food security in the region, the department successfully mounted all courses at all levels, conducted the annual postgraduate seminar, hosted 4 scientific departmental seminars on diverse topical areas, conducted an outreach program for fish farmers which was attended by over 100 farmers in the region. Several members of staff also attended and presented papers in international conferences in Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Uganda, The Netherlands.
  13. In collaborative projects, the department was able to mobilize resources in collaboration with several partners. The current projects being mounted include the EDULINK Fit-for-Purpose Ph.D Curriculum Development Project, and STRECAFISH Project. In these projects we collaborate with Makarere University (Uganda), Rhodes University (South Africa), LUANAR University (Malawi), Ethiopian Institute (Ethiopia) and Boku University (Austria). The department is also privileged to be a collaborator in the World Bank funded African Aquaculture and Fisheries Center of Excellence hosted at LUANAR University, Malawi. These activities have made the department to be very visible in the region. Locally, we continue to play our role in outreach programs. Currently, through MoU’s the department is collaborating with the County Government of Uasin Gishu in fish farming activities where the latter has provided a modern fish hatchery which is complete and will be launched soon. The Department is also collaborating with County Government of Nandi as an Incubator for Fish value chain in an ambitious national program funded by ASDSP with the aim of upgrading fish farmers in the county from small scale farmers to industrialists.
  14. In this academic year, the departmental staff has published 12 papers in refereed journals with several others in preparation. One of the Graduate Assistants graduated with an MSc. from Pwani University with the second on graduating today. Other staff have also been engaged in productive activities in and out of the university conducting research and providing consultancy services in their areas of expertise. Services were offered to Kenya Water Towers Authority, NEMA, LVEMP, State Department of Fisheries, KCDP and Nile Basin Initiative among others. In the field of research, the staff are in collaborative research with other international institutions such as Liebniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Berlin, Germany and Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, New York, USA.

Production of an online Africa Environmental Review Journal (AER Journal) accessible at www.aerjournal.info

Three students from the school participated in Consumer Goods Forum in Capetown, South African.
